Vereshchagin, an outstanding Russian scientist, who was the head of the first department of the Russian Academy of Sciences on Lake Baikal carrying out complex large-scale studies of the lake. Specialists of different disciplines involved in the studies of Lake Baikal and other water bodies of the world take part in this conference.

In 2010, it is planned to discuss scientific problems and prospects of investigations on the following scientific aspects:

  1. Speciation problems in ancient closed systems: molecular and classical approaches and models.
  2. Evolution of genes, genomics, meta-genome analysis of biological communities.
  3. Cycle and mechanisms of assimilation of silicon and other elements in aquatic ecosystems, morphogenesis of siliceous micro- and nanostructures.
  4. Microorganisms: distribution and symbiotic relations in aquatic ecosystems.
  5. Transport of natural and anthropogenic substances in atmosphere and on the interface water-air.
